A Peterlee gym which featured in a Hollywood movie has held its first ever competition to find the strongest male and female competitors from around the region.

Myo Muscle Gym, which is owned by Peterlee businesswoman Leighann Jewitt, decided to launch the contest to see who would come out on top.

The competition was run by Leighann, in partnership with strongman coach Tom Musgrave and strongman competitor Chris McIntyre, to give regional gym goers and amateur and seasoned strongmen and women a competition like no other and to give people a chance to take their first steps into the strongman arena.

Competitors travelled from around the North East to take part.

Leighann said: “We wanted to bring all our gym goers, along with other gym goers from around the region, together to have a battle to see who is the strongest in their ability categories.

“It was great fun, not just for our winners but for everyone who took part.

“We are now gearing up to our next competition, which will determine who can pull the biggest deadlift and push the biggest log or axle.”

The categories were for men’s and women’s beginners, novice and inter so people of all abilities were able to compete.

Myo Muscle Gym’s ‘Summer Push/Pull Showdown’ competition will take place on August 2 and is now open for entry via the website, https://myomusclegym.com/. Cash prizes are on offer to the winners.

The competition comes after the North West Industrial Estate-based gym was chosen to feature in Netflix movie Jackdaw, which was directed by Jamie Childs, who hails from County Durham and stars Jenna Coleman and Oliver Jackson-Cohen.

Leighann added: “Jamie contacted me about filming scenes for Jackdaw in our gym and of course I was delighted to say yes.

“The movie is set in the area and had premieres on Teesside and in Hollywood, so to be part of something on that scale is massive for us.

“You can watch the film now on Netflix and see our fantastic gym in some of the scenes.”

Myo Muscle Gym includes an official hammer strength training centre and a sunbed centre and offers services including cold water therapy, sports massage therapy, reiki reflexology, one to one pro boxing personal training sessions, small group training and strong man classes, as well as other classes to suit all abilities.
