Blackhall air cadets spend the evening with Peterlee firefighters

The 1932 (Blackhall) Royal Air Force Air Cadet Squadron was recently invited to Peterlee Community Fire Station for an evening hosted by White Watch.

The cadets aged between 12 and 16 spent time in the station learning about the work the firefighters undertake and the career paths that may be open to them.

Flying Officer Deborah Fairbotham said: “The cadets were shown the vehicles and the equipment they carry and were given the chance to feel the weight of the kit that can be used in all sorts of situations.  They then tried their hand at laying a hose and found it wasn’t quite as easy as the professionals make it look.

“The highlight of the evening was when they were shown the full light and sound capability of the vehicles. A wonderful time was had by all the cadets who came away with a greater understanding of the range of incidents the Fire and Rescue service attend and some even have a new possible career path.”

Deborah added: “If you have a young person between the ages of 12 (and in year 8 or above) and 17 who would like to know more we are recruiting now. We have lots of external activities planned and they can learn new skills including First Aid, leadership, teaching skills, shooting and even go flying and gliding or attend camps around the country.

“By learning these skills they can gain qualifications and take part in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme to help give them skills and opportunities in later life.  While it can give young people a good idea of what the RAF does there is no obligation to join any of the forces. After an induction period uniforms are provided and there is a low monthly subscription to help provide as many activities as possible free of charge.”
