Graeme Carter from Shred Direct on how he relaxed away from running his business

Dec 22, 2023 | Business

Graeme Carter is Managing Director of Peterlee-based Shred Direct, which he founded in 2013

The former professional footballer (Graeme was on the books at Newcastle United) talks to us about his life away from work, his family life with wife Kay, his three daughters and grandson Luca, and where his favourite place in the world is…

EDB: You run a business, don’t you, Tell us a little bit about that. GC: In 2013 I started a company called Shred Direct and we have just celebrated 10 years in business. We collect and securely shred documents and data for businesses and individuals that are looking to dispose of this sensitive information safely and securely without the risk of it falling into the wrong hands.

EDB: As your own boss, down time will be something you really appreciate. How do you relax away from work? GC: When I’m not working I enjoy playing golf. It can be a very enjoyable game but it can also be a very frustrating game but I think that’s part of the pleasure of it.

EDB: You recently became a grandad for the first time. How are you enjoying this new role? GC: I’m loving being a grandad to our very first grandson Luca. He is now such a part of the family it feels like he’s been with us for years and not just a few weeks. I don’t know what we would do without him and I’m looking forward to giving him a little bit of football coaching in the years to come.

EDB: You used to be a professional footballer. Do you still enjoy playing? GC: I have always loved playing football and being a part of a team but when I reached 50 a few years ago I decided it was time to retire. This was when I realised that I needed to do something else to keep fit and also for my mental health so I took up playing golf and I am thoroughly enjoying playing at Castle Eden golf course.

EDB: Friday night in or out? GC: I usually spend Friday night in with my wife Kay and we share a bottle of wine and a nice meal and try to sit down a watch a movie. Sometimes one of us cooks on a Friday but we also enjoy a takeaway from time to time.

EDB: If we were coming to your house for a dinner party, what could we expect on the menu? GC: I do most of the cooking in our house, everything from a Sunday roast to a curry or stir fry or pasta so I would probably try to make a tapas of foods from around the world.

EDB: Favourite place in the world? GC: We have been lucky enough to travel to a few different countries over the years and I would really love to go back to New York because the sightseeing and food are so good, its definitely one of my favourite places.

EDB: If you could visit anywhere, where would it be? GC: Just before Covid19 struck we were due to go on a cruise of the Mediterranean but obviously that didn’t happen. We are planning to do this next year and are really looking forward to it, fingers crossed.
