New County Durham primary school officially opens

May 27, 2022 | Local News

Celebrations have taken place to mark the official opening of a new County Durham primary school.

Bowburn Primary School was formed when Bowburn Junior School amalgamated with Bowburn Infants and Nursery School in 2019.

Work on the new, purpose-built school site, on Crowtrees Lane, got underway in March 2020 following a £10 million investment from Durham County Council.

Students and teachers were able to move into their new school last April, ahead of celebrations to officially mark the opening of the world-class facilities being held this week.

The school, which was designed by Ryder Architecture working with the council and school staff, has capacity for 540 pupils as well as a 70-place nursery unit.

Representatives from the council, including Cabinet member for children and young people’s services, Cllr Ted Henderson, and Esh Construction, the contractor appointed to construct the new build, also took part in the official opening.

Cllr Henderson said: “It is wonderful to be a part of such a special day for Bowburn. This is a fantastic school that will no doubt deliver world-class 21st century education for the community for decades to come.

“The new build demonstrates our commitment to providing the best possible education for children in County Durham. These fantastic facilities will help pupils make the most of the first stages of their learning journey, helping to inspire a love of learning, sport and extra-curricular activities.”

Jackie Glass, headteacher of Bowburn Primary School, said: “It is wonderful to finally be together as one school in our new building. The children and whole staff team love the new facilities it offers, as well as the increased space.

“This has had a positive impact on our teaching and learning, making it more enjoyable for everyone. We look forward to seeing our students grow and further develop here and celebrating all that they achieve.”
