Believe Housing and Protech join forces to donate 60 laptops to schools across County Durham

Mar 22, 2021 | Local News

A donation of 60 laptops is helping five primary schools across County Durham.

believe housing has been working with specialist IT equipment recycling and disposal firm Protech to help local schools ease back into the classroom.

A batch of laptops, no longer needed by believe housing, have been donated to Brandon Primary School, Oakley Cross Primary in West Auckland, Victoria Lane Academy in Coundon, Willington Primary School and Seascape Primary School in Eden Hill, Peterlee.

The IT equipment will be available to use in classrooms, but can also help youngsters who might need to catch up on schoolwork after the school day for whatever reason.

Peterlee-based Protech splits 50% of it’s time to IT equipment disposal and 50% ‘paying it forward’ by working with both local and international charities.

Graeme Clark, Service Delivery Manager from believe housing, said: “Even though schools are very close to returning to the classroom, the need for laptops hasn’t shrunk. We know from speaking to schools that many youngsters will still really benefit from the ability to work productively from home for many months to come.

“It’s been great to work with Protech to make this donation possible. We’ve got a well-established community investment programme. But this is the first time that we’ve donated computer equipment to the community because we don’t think that the shift we’ve seen online during the pandemic is going to go away.”

Ian Murphy, Protech’s Chief Operations Officer, said: “We’d like to continue supporting the community in any way we can, it’s more important than ever we level the playing field and give everyone the opportunity to get access to IT equipment. We’re proud of the work we’ve done and the support we’ve had from believe housing – this is just the start.”

believe housing’s community investment programme supports food banks, sports clubs, schools and charities across most of County Durham and many surrounding areas. The grant scheme has already distributed more than £150,000 during this financial year. Full details of the programme are available on the believe housing website, or by calling the Community Investment Team on 0300 1311 999.
