Easington Village is in full flower this summer thanks to a local voluntary group and a little help from a leading housing association.

Easington Village in Bloom Group have recently brightened the community with new planters and flowers, thanks to funding from believe housing’s community grant.

With just £350 the village green has been surrounded by colourful plants and flowers in brand new long-life planters, all intended to brighten up an area used by the community, young and old. The 30-strong voluntary group also brought in help from local Brownie groups to help with the planting and encourage future generations to become involved in brightening up their community.

Funding Officer from believe housing, Damian Pearson, said: “The work that the Easington Village in Bloom Group do is great. They’ve really made an impact around the village green. We were over the moon that we could help the group with the planting.

“Projects like this, where even a relatively small amount of funding can make a big difference, were exactly why we created out community funding programme.”

Mrs Davies from the Easington Village in Bloom Group said: “Thanks to funding we have been able to purchase new tubs and plants, volunteering brings the whole community together.  It gives a sense of pride for all involved, and the flowers put a smile on everyone’s face.”

Further funding for the planting project came from County Councillors Angela Surtees and David Boyes from their Neighbourhood Budget. Councillor Surtees said: “When Easington Village in Bloom contacted us about their dilapidated flower tubs we were very happy to help fund new ones, the old ones had been in situ for a number of years and were starting to fall apart. The new tubs will have a longer street life and the community volunteers do a marvellous job every year looking after them with the help from other groups like the Brownies.”

The scheme provides funds of up to £500 and is designed to help new groups take their first steps as well as supporting longstanding organisations. The application process has been kept deliberately simple and funding decisions are made monthly to ensure groups are not waiting for lengthy periods to find out if they have been successful.

Any community organisation, non-profit making group, charity or school is eligible for the scheme.
