The new Dean of Durham has pledged his support for the inaugural Durham City Run.
The 20 July race – a Durham County Council initiative, organised by Events of the North, with sponsorship from Prince Bishops Shopping Centre and the Northern Echo – is expected to bring thousands of runners, spectators and volunteers to the North East.
And visiting the city, keen runner Canon Andrew Tremlett – who takes up his post this summer – met with the organisers of the region’s latest road race and, along with a county councillor Rachel Lumsden, signed up to take part.
Andrew Tremlett said: “I am very excited to be taking part in the inaugural Durham City Run.
“It is wonderful to think that so many people will be coming together to start and finish at Durham Cathedral and I’m sure the sight of this majestic building will provide some much needed inspiration and motivation as people make their way around the course.
“This beautiful city is soon to be my home when I become Dean of Durham and I can’t think of a better way to begin meeting members of the public and fellow running enthusiasts than by taking part in the run.”
The Durham City Run will be held on the evening of Wednesday 20 July and will give runners the option of a 5K or 10K run on a route in and around the city centre.
