The arrival of Disney Cruise Lines into the Port of Tyne this summer is set to benefit Durham Cathedral, as it announces that passengers from the ship have signed up for tours to the world-famous building.
The Disney Magic ship will visit the North East twice in June as part of two 12-day itineraries around the British Isles and parts of Europe. From a selection of shore excursions on offer, passengers will be able to experience special guided tours of Durham Cathedral including a fun-filled family tour.
Children can enjoy getting dressed up as Monks as they tour the Cathedral, which will include an exclusive peek behind-the-scenes into the Chapter House, which features in the Harry Potter films as Professor McGonagall’s classroom. Children can literally follow in the footsteps of the Monks as they enjoy learning about monastic life while walking through the Cloister in their costumes. After the tour families can explore the Cathedral on their own with exciting quests on various Children’s Trails plus puppet making and story-telling sessions in the Chapter House.
Tours inside the Cathedral will take in the breath-taking architecture of the Nave and the magnificent stained glass windows. Furthermore, there will be exclusive admission to the 14th century Monk’s Dormitory for interactive exhibitions and displays in this Claustral building. This treasured space will soon form part of the Cathedral’s Open Treasure exhibition experience, opening to the public this summer. Visitors can also mark their visit by placing a brick on the now-famous 300,000 brick Durham Cathedral in LEGO® project before enjoying some refreshment or shopping in the Cathedral’s vaulted Undercroft Foyer.
Head of Marketing and Events, Ruth Robson said: “We are delighted that Disney Cruise Lines has chosen to include Durham Cathedral in the wide range of shore excursions it is offering passengers sailing on the Disney Magic.
“Durham Cathedral has been a place of pilgrimage throughout its existence and it is wonderful to think that we will be engaging with a new type of pilgrim when our cruise passengers arrive. We hope that while the passengers enjoy the magic of Disney on-board ship, they are wowed by the splendour of our breathtaking Cathedral when they arrive here and discover the awe-inspiring wonders that Durham Cathedral offers.”
By securing this arrangement, Durham Cathedral is also helping to secure its future, with funds raised from the tours going towards the daily running costs and vital conservation work needed to preserve the Cathedral for future generations.
